Empowering Lives Through Holistic Community Support

Sheepcare Community Centre was established in 2002 to respond to the growing needs of vulnerable children in the Soweto slums of Nairobi Breaking the Cycle of Poverty. Founded by Luke Jakoywa and other dedicated community leaders, the organization began by providing support to orphans, children affected by HIV/AIDS, and families struggling to make ends meet. Our aim is to uplift disadvantaged communities and offer them a pathway to a better future.
Sheepcare Community Centre is a registered Community-Based Organization (CBO) that operates without profit, political affiliations, or discrimination. We are committed to empowering the “poorest of the poor” by addressing their basic needs and offering them opportunities to transform their lives.

Our Journey

Empowering Communities Since 2002

Empowering Vulnerable Communities Through Holistic Community Support
Sheepcare Community Centre was founded at the end of 2002 by Luke Jakoywa and a group of community leaders who were deeply moved by the pressing needs of many children, primarily HIV/AIDS orphans and those of school-going age, who were forced to roam the streets scavenging for food. The desperation evident in the faces of mothers struggling to provide for their families by selling sukuma wiki (kale) and engaging in small businesses was heartbreaking.
The community leadership realized they could no longer turn a blind eye to the glaring needs within their society. To assist in caring for these vulnerable children, they gathered a few young men who were “doing nothing for nothing” throughout the week. They proposed an alternative: rather than staying idle, it would be more meaningful to engage in “something for nothing.” Initially, two young men and one girl understood the significance of this message and agreed to support Luke in caring for the small babies, allowing their mothers more time to search for food to sustain their families.
Thus, Sheepcare Community Centre was born from this humble beginning, aiming to serve the Soweto slums, located 15 km from the city center of Nairobi, regardless of race, sex, or religion. As a registered Community Based Organization, Sheepcare is non-profit, non-political, and non-discriminative, committed to uplifting the poorest of the poor to improve their lives through holistic community support.
Our mission continues to resonate deeply within the community, empowering those in need and transforming lives together.
